This day in music history, February 6, 1973, “Superstition” by R&B/soul legend Stevie Wonder soared to the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.

“Superstition” was released as the lead single from Wonder’s 1972 album Talking Book and would become his first hit single.

The song’s lyrics are about overcoming superstitions and bad luck. “Superstition” was a commercial success by not only attaining chart-topping status in the United States, but it was also recognized with several accolades from the music industry.

Foremost, the song won two GRAMMY Awards at the 16th GRAMMYS in 1974 for Best R&B Song and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. It also garnered an American Music Award for Favorite Soul/R&B Song.

“Superstition” has been covered by many artists and is considered to be one of Wonder’s signature songs.
