Spotlight on the 2023 VMAs: Stars, Surprises, and the Battle for the Moonman
It’s that time of the year again! MTV has unveiled the contenders for its coveted Moonman at the 2023 VMAs (Video Music Awards). Taylor Swift and SZA reign supreme this year, clinching eight and six nominations, respectively. Their chart-topping hits “Anti-Hero” and “Kill Bill” both vie for the prestigious ‘Video of the Year’ title.
Not far behind in this music extravaganza are Doja Cat, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo, and Sam Smith Kim Petras; each staking their claim with five nods apiece.
Pencil it in, folks! The spectacle will unfold on September 12 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
But wait, there’s more. This year’s roster sees a refreshing influx of new talent. A staggering 35 artists are making their VMA nomination debut, featuring the likes of Boygenius, GloRilla, and the captivating PinkPantheress. Other debuting artists to watch out for are Ice Spice, Flo Milli, Reneé Rapp, and Peso Pluma, to name just a few.
Of course, the VMAs wouldn’t be complete without its regular roster of superstars. 2023 sees the return of Lana Del Rey, Bad Bunny, Shakira, Janelle Monae, Paramore, Blackpink, Adele, and Rosalía. Punk rock and metal enthusiasts will be delighted with nominations for Blink-182, Fall Out Boy, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the legendary Metallica. Diddy, Karol G, and Tomorrow X Together also join the fray.
And let’s not forget Beyoncé, ever the musical royalty, is in the running for ‘Artist of the Year’. While she chose not to grace us with music videos for her “Renaissance” era, her indomitable spirit and talent have ensured she remains a key player in this year’s awards.
