In a pivotal ruling today, Tory Lanez, the prominent Canadian musician, has been handed a decade-long prison sentence in connection to the 2020 incident involving fellow artist Megan Thee Stallion.

Upon reaching out via a Platinum Music Magazine representative, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office remains tight-lipped. The decision by Judge David Herriford entails six years for assault and an additional four, attributed to a firearm enhancement.

Meghann Cuniff, a renowned court journalist, documented that Lanez—whose birth name is Daystar Peterson—took the opportunity to voice his sentiments, expressing enduring affection for Megan. He candidly stated, “She’s someone I still care deeply about.” Addressing the night of the incident, Lanez admitted to actions and remarks that he now regrets, shedding light on the bond they shared over mutual grief, given the loss of their mothers.

The courtroom atmosphere was palpable, with TMZ reporting pronounced distress from Lanez’s family. Some remarks from Lanez’s kin necessitated their escort out of the premises.

Judge Herriford’s remarks hint at the complexity of the case. He finds it challenging to juxtapose the man who allegedly shot Megan and the benevolent individual, a caring father, described by many during the hearing.

While District Attorney George Gascón is slated to discuss the sentencing publicly, details from Monday’s hearing revealed a significant amount of support for Lanez, with over 70 letters vouching for his character, including a surprising contribution from Iggy Azalea. The rapper clarified her stance, emphasizing her call for a rehabilitative approach rather than outright endorsement.

In a poignant statement shared during the proceedings, Megan Thee Stallion encapsulated the trauma she’s endured since the incident. “Not a single day of peace,” she remarked, underlining the profound impact the shooting has had on her life and psyche.

The gravity of the case became evident last December when Lanez was convicted on multiple counts, one of them being assault with a semiautomatic firearm. DA Gascón, at that juncture, highlighted the challenges faced by women, particularly Black women, in finding justice and the wider societal changes that are imperative.

Though the sentencing was originally marked for January, procedural delays pushed it to August. With expectations from Deputy DA Alexander Bott of a minimum nine-year sentence, the verdict echoes the severity of Lanez’s actions.

Megan Thee Stallion had previously shared her harrowing account and the aftermath in an emotional Elle piece earlier this year. Her words serve as a stark reminder of the grueling journey she’s undertaken, recovering from trauma and battling naysayers in the industry.

Reports preceding today’s judgment indicated Lanez’s legal team advocating for probation over incarceration. With the final decision now public, it marks a defining moment in a case that has captivated the music world.
