StreamLINE Single Review : “The Debutant & The Dancehall” by Midnight Lover’s Club (Alternative Rock, Indie Rock)
Midnight Lover’s Club is the brainchild of Erik Johnstone (formerly of hometown & young). The visionary musical project was originated in San Francisco, California when Erik reached a point in which he wanted to take his artistry to another level. His ultimate goal was to begin creating a more established sound; a sound inspired by such groups as Kings of Leon, Arcade Fire, and The Killers.
Erik’s epiphany has manifested itself into what has become Midnight Lover’s Club and today we’re spotlighting a single of theirs titled “The Debutant & The Dancehall”, a provocative song and composition that possesses an eclectic soundscape, as well as a coy lyricism that hints of possibly a forbidden love that’s blossoming or a possible romance that never quite gets off the ground.
The instrumentation in “The Debutant & The Dancehall” has an enticing smoky, hazy industrial vibe to it. The sonics have an edgy appeal and are a masterful blend of electronic elements with your quintessential rock sound, at some points in the song sounding similar to the electropop records that dominated the 80’s music landscape. It definitely conjures up a nostalgic feeling for me when I listen to it.
The production on this track is driven by a prominent percussion pattern which pounds the soundscape and is draped with a piercing lead guitar amongst a bevy of haunting, ethereal melodies. These melodies are composed of abstract sounds, synths and brooding pads in the background while there is also a distorted guitar riff set off in the distance which also enhances the mysterious aura of the song.
While the pristine sound design and production level on “The Debutant & The Dancehall” deserve extremely high praise, I must also commend the exceptional lead vocal performance that conveys the energy of the song’s concept vividly and accentuates the stirring, cinematic feel that you get as the song proceeds. The vocals are very expressive and draw you into the thought-provoking storyline with its emotive tones and inflections throughout.

Lyrics for “The Debutant & The Dancehall”
At some place, some time
She’ll be there
And she’ll place her fingers between mine
And love me till death
Holding out, for some exceptional love
Lost in doubt, are you the one that she wants?
She walks in
Wearing a black Dôen dress
It’s all for some old familiar face
In private
But I don’t dance
Much like I used to now
She’s gone
But you’re a familiar face
I’ll try it
Are you scared yet darling?
What’s your intention
I can’t explain your aura
Of haunting contention
Let’s begin to feel again I know it’s hard
You’ve seem to escape with someone else but your all I want
Then she walks in
Wearing a black Dôen dress
It’s all for some old familiar face
In private
But I don’t dance
Much like I used to now
She’s gone
But you’re a familiar face
I’ll try it
