Exquisite and debonair…that’s the words that define the jazz stylings of the immensely multi-dimensional talent Tamela D’Amico. Tamela is an artist in every sense of the word as she has crafted a flourishing career in the entertainment industry in a variety of facets as she is an award-winning recording artist, actress, filmmaker and well-established social media influencer.

Tamela has cultivated her extensive artistic background into a successful music career which commenced with her emergence on the jazz scene in 2009 with the release of her debut album Got A Little Story, produced by six-time Grammy Award winner Jimmy Hoyson. The 10-song seminal album project features Tamela’s pristine vocals in such standout songs and compositions as Perfidia, Charade and When October Goes.

Tamela’s breadth of music has resonated with music listeners and industry tastemakers alike as her songs can be heard on almost 150 national jazz-based/adult contemporary radio and cable outlets as well as numerous international radio platforms.

Achieving such a wide variety of accomplishments and notoriety related to her music endeavors in the jazz space, Tamela decided to shift course in her music direction and took a giant leap. Nonetheless she has still dropped another gem of a record in the form of an electroswing, pop single titled “Boring 20s” in collaboration with producer Wolfgang Lohr and Grammy nominated songwriter Ashley Slater. The title is ironic as a majority of people are familiar with the term “Roaring 20s”, so where does the concept of “Boring 20s derive from?!? Tamela was gracious enough to share the many compelling and personal factors involved in sparking the creation of this spectacular track…..

For Boring 20’s, while in quarantine, I was getting a little stir crazy, staying home. So, I dipped into my bucket list of things I wanted to accomplish in the down time. So, I utilized a lot of my time to do all that had been on the creative back burner. The new 20s started in a way that was less than what I had dreamed of, being a Jazz baby. I had notions of grand revivals of the Jazz Age. My father was sick and then passed away, I was unbearably sad. I needed my music and after trying to uplift myself listening to electroswing music. I reached out to producer Wolfgang Lohr & songwriter/performer Ashley Slater (I didn’t know them) after hearing one of their awesome electroswing tunes on Twitter, of all places.

I told them that I wanted to write a song with them about how this new twenties time period is not the “roaring twenties” I imagined but rather the “Boring 20s”. We brainstormed and they did the magic they do and while in 3 different countries, we agreed to work together all through email and never spoke live until the product was finished. That amazes me the most. Why did they say yes? How did we get it done? The song concludes all I was feeling at the time which I learned was pretty much what everyone else was feeling thanks to the masterful wordsmith that Ashley is, feeling the feels with me, and Wolfgang uplifting us up with these beats to dance to.

Absolutely fascinating how “Boring 20s” all came together and Tamela conveys the concept exceptionally well. First off, for those unfamiliar with electroswing, it is a burgeoning subgenre of electronic music which has become a phenomenon over the last couple of years. It encapsulates the upbeat grooves and harmonies of jazz and swing infused with modern drum rhythms of pop, house, drum and bass and other EDM genres. It is an incredible smorgasbord of sound that masterfully meshes a swatch of nostalgia with a dose of the contemporary.

The soundscape of “Boring 20s” boasts such characteristics and then some as it features a lively piano riff and up tempo accompanying brass section…trombones and trumpets ablaze cut straight from the mold of a 1920’s jazz concert. Tamela accentuates the kinetic instrumentation as she delivers a roof-raising charismatic vocal performance that is purely electrifying.

As electroswing goes, the vintage component of “Boring 20s” is masterfully intertwined with a pumping EDM style kick drum and bass with a wily electric guitar phrase in the hook. “Boring 20s” takes your imagination on a wild ride through time travel as it jettisons you from Harlem’s historic jazz venue The Cotton Club to being in the middle of throngs of dance lovers at an EDM festival in Europe.

Lyrics

I had my phaser set, I set it to fun
This roaring 20s was gonna be the one
The parties, the booze, the life, the nights, ready to roar
Then came the virus baby, life was no more

I was gonna strut my moves, work the schmooze
Drink the booze, ignore the news, work my shoes
Then it all went wrong

Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
Just let me out or I will kick down the door
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
This roaring 20s is the boring 20s

There is no nightlife and there is no day life
No Jenny Diver ’cause I ain’t Mac The Knife
Four walls and walls and walls and walls is all that I see
If I can’t break out soon, there’ll be no more me

I was gonna strut my moves, work the schmooze
Drink the booze, ignore the news, work my shoes
Then it all went wrong

Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
Just let me out or I will kick down the door
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
This roaring 20s is the boring 20s

Can’t even get out of my bed every day
Even when the sun starts to shine
A TikTok diet but I can’t even play
The steps to heaven number
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven

Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
Just let me out or I will kick down the door
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh ooh
This roaring 20s is the boring 20s
