Sunburnt Sky is the beaming persona and musical creation of Mike “Seels” Sealy, a visionary singer, songwriter and recording artist from southern Utah who has crafted an immersive sound that masterfully meshes the vibrant sounds of reggae and the Caribbean with the gritty sonics and edge of indie rock.

Seels’ path to the development of this unique fusion of sound dates back to his alternative rock roots growing up in San Diego which culminated in four studio album releases under the “Seels” moniker, including 2019’s full-length project Nowhere Fast.

Attributing this expansive recording experience in addition to influences from such notable acts as UB40, Bob Marley, Stick Figure, Sublime and The Movement among many, Seels has cultivated his diverse musical background into the release of his debut album under the Sunburnt Sky brand titled The Ten Thousand Things, a spectacular reggae/indie rock 12-song compilation which features the track of today’s spotlight “Peace Sign”.

Sunburnt Sky

“Peace Sign” brings an energy of pure uplifting vibes from the glistening soundscape to the engaging lyrical content which is extremely relatable as it sheds light on how we should focus on life from a more positive perspective, enjoying its peaks while also facing its challenges with a steadfast determination to move forward. Seels explains the context behind “Peace Sign” and what sparked its creation…

I wanted to write a song that reflected the positive aspect of this beautiful yet difficult existence. The term ‘Memento Mori’ is used in the song which is a Latin term which means “remember you must die.” The point of this reminder isn’t to be morbid or promote fear, but to inspire and motivate. Life is a short blessing, so let’s give it our full potential and not take it for granted. Peace Sign is an ode to one love and a hope for a happy and blessed future.

Seels conveys the theme and outlook of positivity extremely well in a demonstrative vocal performance which comes off as genuinely expressive, particularly in the buildup towards the hook and throughout the song. The authenticity in Seels’ voice amplifies the appeal of the song exponentially and is a perfect companion to the eclectic instrumentation that’s rhythmically packing an indelible punch.

You’re treated to the core reggae elements with every strum of the classic skankin’ guitar rhythm and grooving bass line that is underscored by a striking drum pattern and lush electric guitar section surging ahead as a rugged complement to a melodic and catchy piano riff that also graces the composition.

Knockout
You’re something to talk about
Strikeout
I guess I’ll find a new route
Pushing off the deadline tell my mom I’ll be fine
Getting used to just getting by

More About Sunburnt Sky

Hailing from southern Utah, Sunburnt Sky is the musical creation of Mike “Seels” Seely, fusing sun-drenched reggae vibes with alternative indie rock.

Growing up in San Diego to the soundtrack of bands such as U2, INXS, and Radiohead, alternative rock laid the foundation of Seels, where four albums were recorded between 2011 and 2019.

Drawing from earlier inspirations of Sublime and UB40, and after spending some time as a teenager in the Dominican Republic where Bob Marley was hugely influential, the seed of Sunburnt Sky was planted. However, it wasn’t until the discovery of more recent bands such as Stick Figure, The Movement, and Iya Terra, that Sunburnt Sky was born.
The debut album The Ten Thousand Things (2022) features eleven original songs as well as a cover of the popular Empire of the Sun hit Walking on a Dream.

Reggae top 40 weekly recently put the song Peace Sign as #5, following top industry artists such as The Movement, Stick Figure, and SOJA.
