Indie recording artist Beth Ann McDowell is fortuitously laying the groundwork for the makings of a smash new album release, The Sim is Real, slated to be unveiled to the world on April 29. McDowell has already revealed two singles from the upcoming album, “Killers of the Early Morning” and a lyrical gem, “Where the Calm Things Are”, which we covered glowingly in a previous review.

McDowell has masterfully manifested her expansive musical skillset into a flourishing recording career, driven by her background as a classically trained pianist and vocalist who has travelled the world and collaborated on a variety of high-profile international projects, most notably her time spent in Italy working with such artists and bands as Addamanera, Mariposa, Enrico Gabrielli and Sergio Giusti.

The South Korean born, Minneapolis raised singer-songwriter continues her wondrous ascension in the music industry with the release of her third single from the upcoming album titled “Alis”, an incredibly engaging and introspective song in which she dives into a deeply personal subject matter and challenging period in her life.

To put it all into context, the backstory of “Alis” follow along these lines…”Alis was written during an extremely dark winter for McDowell, after moving home from Italy and shortly after being faced with someone close to her needing her help while she was still extremely fragile. The song paints the story of her feelings of helplessness and impotence in helping this friend, and the feeling that she failed them even after doing all she could. Seeming to call out to this Alis, wishing for them to return, McDowell expresses her regret and sorrow.” – Source: Beth Ann McDowell management

McDowell captures these sentiments ever so well with a terrific display of her craftiness as a songwriter and performance dynamism as she expressively provides her signature warm, sweet-toned vocals over the spectacular indie pop/rock composition produced by Walt Vincent. The blend of acoustic and electronic elements in the production makes for a compelling amalgamation of sound that puts the overall sonics on another tier of appeal.

The musicality of “Alis” fits the heartfelt lyricism exceptionally well and McDowell impresses, particularly, as she projects a relatable authenticity with each word she sings so gracefully…

I think about it now and then still

This piece of paper I can’t throw away

I tried to be the best I could be

It wasn’t good enough, I’m sorry

More About Beth Ann McDowell

Growing up as an adopted Korean American in Minnesota, McDowell began to carve out her identity as someone with a different perspective on the world than many of her peers. As somewhat of a tomboy who preferred sitting with the boys at recess listening to them tell dirty jokes than playing with dolls or house, she also began delving into language and humor to face the world. She even held a fundraiser in 2018, following her love for comedy, to raise money for a non-profit that helps veterans obtain mental health care, and Jim Gaffigan performed a stand-up set charitably for the cause.

Her range of influences include Franco Battiato to Mozart, Aimee Mann to Nina Simone. A classical pianist, she became interested in psych-rock after becoming close friends with the band Addamanera in Italy while she was living there, along with the label Trovarobato and their live radio talk show Magazzeno Bis. This group of friends had an extremely strong role in opening her up to the possibilities of songwriting, sound, and playing live which she did with Addamanera as their keyboardist and a vocalist. She was often tapped for her friends’ album recordings to provide her ethereal, Julee Cruise-esque vocals and range for Mariposa’s cover of Gong’s “Oily Way”, and vocals on Addamanera’s last recorded album, “Il Uomo Che Si Pensava Quell’Altro”.

The release of her album “The Sim Is Real”, produced by R. Walt Vincent, is slated for April 29, and the release of “Alis”, her third single off of the album, adds yet another layer to the depth of this album.
