New Music Friday has passed, and with it comes 100 beautiful songs for listening pleasure. However, with so many songs available, some might just want to know the best of the crop. Well, look no further, as I’ve picked out my personal five favorites. I tend to like stranger and more “experimental” songs than the norm, but even I can enjoy the occasional rock or pop song, so my tastes may be strange to the ordinary listener – but who doesn’t want a little bit of weirdness in their life? Perhaps you might discover something new.

Song #1: fue mejor (Kali Uchis, ft. SZA)

fue mejor album cover

This slow, seductive song mixes some English and Spanish lyrics together into an unforgettable package. Even if you don’t understand Spanish (like yours truly) the passionate lyrics are easy on the ears. To those who do understand Spanish, be warned the song covers some sexually explicit material and the subject of cheating and lost loves.

Song #2: Write A List Of Things To Look Forward To (Courtney Barnett)

From the song title and the upbeat instrumentals, you’d expect this to be an encouraging song with an uplifting message. However, listening closely to the lyrics yields a darker tone about futility. The juxtaposition alone makes this song worth listening to – and it’s catchy, too.

Song #3: The Distance (Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs)

The Distance album cover

Light on lyrics but heavy in pleasant instrumentals, this song is sure to get you bobbing your head. The focus of this song is on the electronic beats, and it shows, as the song even abruptly stops and almost seems like it “restarted” near the end. It’s a relaxing song that’s worth checking out if you just want something to nod along to.

Song #4: Beating (Tirzah – Colourgrade)

Colourgrade album cover

This is a typical mellow song with soft lyrics, but what really stands out about it is the beat and background instrumentals. They constantly fade in and out, adding a warbling effect that makes for a surreal, albeit great song. Tirzah’s soothing voice is easy on the ears, too.

Song #5: u look stupid (LØLØ)

u look stupid album title

How could you resist a song that literally does nothing but insult you, even in the title? Since most of the songs have been pretty relaxed up until this point, here’s a more loud and proud one. The guitars, the upfront and forceful lyrics, and the filter over the voice all make this song distinct and unforgettable.

This concludes my five picks for New Music Friday. While I’d say none of these are indicative of my true music tastes, as most of these songs are fairly tame, they’re all amazing to listen to nonetheless. Hopefully you enjoy them as much as I did!
