VELVET SHAKES RELEASE DEBUT EP “MELLOWDRAMA”

After a year full of complications in 2020, Velvet Shakes pulled through in 2021 with the release of their first EP, Mellowdrama (https://amzn.to/3o5my5b). The band released the EP on September 24.
Velvet Shakes made a name for themselves ever since they formed in June 2018. This trio based in Manchester have a distinct indie style with a psychedelic edge, self-described as “somewhere in sludge between electronic disco and cosmic pop”. Things were looking up for them when 2020 began. They produced five successful singles, confirmation for music showcases like Focus Wales, and even support from music platforms like Amazing Radio and BBC Introducing. However, Coronavirus delayed their attempts to break out with a solo album until 2021, where they finally released their four-part EP Mellowdrama.
Velvet Shakes described this time of turmoil as inspiration when describing the mood of their album. “Our four-track debut EP is called Mellowdrama,” the band describes. “Because it both encapsulates the passion and emotion of a traditional ‘melodrama’ but also because it was created during lockdown when life had never been so ‘mellow’ being stuck in our homes whilst outside and on the news all of this ‘drama’ was unfolding.”
Mellowdrama‘s four tracks all contain the upbeat, funky style Velvet Shakes is known for. The EP includes “Can You Do The Right Thing”, the first single revealed in the album. This song made it into Batch 413 of the Fresh Faves of Fresh On The Net. Also included are “Material Life”, “Alone Again”, and “Your Love”. Velvet Shakes announced this album with a YouTube video uploaded to their channel. The video shows the band’s vocalist, Josh Bitchell, trying to give a preview of one of the songs. Unfortunately, his attempts are met with technical difficulties, culminating in him giving up.
