If time travel was possible, where would you go?
Kemper Grant’s debut effort “Jungle’ is an 8-track album which doubles as a virtual time machine.
“Jungle” takes you on a mental journey as the eclectic sonics of the eight tracks brilliantly weave through various time periods.
The Oklahoma recording artist pushes the envelope as he meshes elements of rap, dance, new wave, electronic and R&B to round out the dynamics of the multi-dimensional album.
Tracks like “All Day All Night” and “Blind’ jump off the page with their contemporary trap drums, driving percussion and bass infused with R&B type melodic rhythms.
Kemper Grant’s smooth vocal delivery flows effortlessly over the well-produced beats of these tracks and blend extremely well with guest vocalists Young Polo and Emily Auer respectively.
“Electra” and “The Image” take you to another space in time as these tracks remind me of the new wave pop hits of the 80’s à la Pet Shop Boys or A-Ha.
Kemper Grant’s lush and harmonic vocals create a captivating presence on these timepiece songs.
Then you bring a song like “Uber Ride to Cry“ into the mix…and please do not be deceived by the title.
Full disclosure, before pressing play, I was expecting a ballad reflecting on lost love but instead was greeted with an upbeat body-moving tune.
Ironically “Uber Ride to Cry” speaks of a modern day phenomena like Uber while the synth-laden sound is a rhythmic, dance tune reminiscent of the late 70’s.
Another standout on the album for me, is “Round-a-Bout” which boasts rich guitar riffs over spacious synths. Kemper Grant tops it off with a soulful staccato legato vocal performance.
Overall Thoughts on “Jungle”
“Jungle” is a captivating listening experience as it touches on a variety of sounds that have shaped music in some way over the last four decades.
