StreamLINE had the pleasure of speaking with hip-hop artist Moe D for our latest artist feature. He provided some excellent insight into his career, latest projects and the state of the music industry.

*********

Please tell us a bit about your background, where you’re from etc.

Thank you for having me! I go by the name of Moe D, music artist from Holyoke, Massachusetts. It all started when I got a karaoke from my mother for Christmas when I was like 8 or 9.

I then got my own official studio when I was 13 and I’ve been songwriting, rapping, singing, producing, beat making, audio engineering since, ALL ME!

What were your early music influences? What was the catalyst in you deciding to pursue music professionally?

Honestly, it was like a gift from heaven when I got that karaoke for Christmas.

Also, my dad worked at Holyoke News where he would always bring me books and magazines with CD’s in them with a lot of underground music.

I then began to study music history, especially the history of Hip-Hop.

How would you describe your sound? How has it evolved over the years?

I consider my sounds as purely creative, authentic, and original…Hip Hop! I’ve experimented with all types of sounds, rhythms and flows and feel that over the years I have been able to evolve into a more diverse music artist.

“Evolution”

Please tell us about your latest album “Evolution” released this May. How was the recording process on the project? As a producer yourself, did you produce the entire project or were there some collaborations?

My album “Evolution” was released on May 15, 2020. The creative and recording process for this project was 100% original, recorded and created all in my home studio.

The entire album was created by me, including the lyrics, beats, rapping, singing, mixing, mastering, production, distribution and so forth. The album title itself says it all, life is always about evolving into a better you!

One of our favorites on the project is “Authentic’. What inspired the track? Please tell us how the concept of the music video came together?

I appreciate that! Off the album “Evolution” is my song called “Authentic”, which was really inspired by coming out with a statement song that felt deeply rooted to the roots of Hip-Hop.

The music video came to be with the motorcycle vibe by thinking to implement bikes for a series of automobile videos, which I plan to do race cars vibe on the next one.

What’s a Moe D live performance like? Describe the vibe.  What has been your most memorable show in your career so far?

A live performance by Moe D, yours truly, is LIVE! I like to bring good energy on stage and precise delivery. The vibe is usually intense, real passionate.

I’d have to say that probably the most memorable show of my career thus far was during the Puerto Rican Festival in Boston.

To my surprise, that day I was found backstage alongside boxing legend Miguel Cotto and performing in front of a LIVE crowd right before the main event of the night!

That show was by far the loudest applause and best reception I’ve ever gotten from a crowd. People even came up to the stage to take pictures with me and ask for autographs. So yes, most memorable show so far.

Thoughts and Insight

Do you think the streaming era is a positive or negative for the indie recording artist?

I think the streaming era is mainly positive for music artist, especially for the indie artist.

I’d say it can kind of saturate the market, but allows the artist to experiment and learn to create systems to accomplish certain song/album goals such as plays & sales, and use data to plan better including booking shows and placements.

If you could have a conversation with any artist or musician, living or not, who would it be and why?

If I can have a conversation with any artist or musician in all-time, 2 names come to mind, Quincy Jones and Jay Z. Quincy has been a catalyst of the music industry in a major way.

But If I had to choose one person, I’d have to say Jay Z. I fully respect the Man’s grind, coming up from nothing and being one of the greatest. Also owning so many successful businesses aside from his music.

It would be endless the insight that I would learn from him about the music industry and beyond!
