Ever since the controversial appearance of the Tupac hologram at Coachella in 2012, hologram technology has been at the forefront of discussion in terms of emerging technology in the music industry. Since that time, there have been other attempts at duplicating this fascinating technology. Artists such as Michael Jackon, Ol’ Dirty Bastard and Ronnie Dio have also been presented in holographic form to live audiences.

With the recent announcement of the Whitney Houston hologram tour and a 50-city hologram tour of Roy Orbison scheduled for later this year it is obvious that the age of the hologram performance has arrived. Some may view it as a shameless attempt to rake in a tremendous amount of money. I certainly understand that point…..and in many ways find it shameless as well, however the emergence of the hologram technology peaks my interests.

If these scheduled hologram tours are successful it would completely change the landscape of touring as we know it. Concert promoters would have a field day conjuring up tours for prominent deceased musicians whom the public is clamoring to see live. Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain, Prince…. the list goes on and on. These holographic tours could even bring in more revenue than prominent living artists. I know for a fact as a huge Michael Jackson fan, if a holographic tour was scheduled, I’d be front and center trying to buy a ticket lol.

As it relates to Whitney, I think this is an outstanding opportunity for fans to once again experience the vivrant talent that she was. The motives of the Houston estate may be nefarious but I believe it’s a win-win for all involved. What’s your take on these holographic performances?

(CNN)Seven years after she died, Whitney Houston is set to go on tour.

Pat Houston, the pop star’s sister-in-law, former manager and now president and chief executive officer of her estate said in a statement, “Whitney prided herself on her family and that included her fans.”

“She adored her audiences and that’s why we know she would have loved this holographic theatrical concept,” Pat Houston said. “An event at this level is something special and Base Hologram’s track record to be fully authentic and respectful made them the perfect partner. This upcoming tour will allow audiences to experience Whitney’s amazing voice and passion for music for a long time to come and help them share that magic with future generations.”

  1. Weird!!!, weird!!!, weird!!! I bet the ticket prices will be an arm and a leg. I’m not paying top dollar to see a projection on the stage

  2. Disrespectful to me. I get it! $$$$$$, but still, respect these artists’ legacy. i’m a proponent of technology BUT I just can’t wrap my head around these “tours”.
