A few months ago, singer-songwriter and producer Kenny Pahina dropped a self-titled EP, “KENNY PAHINA.” The rising star followed the EP’s release with the release of the single, “Playas Never Die,” which closed out last year on a high note. “Playas Never Die” served as a lead single for his freshly released EP, “NIGHT OF THE DEAD.” The “NIGHT OF THE DEAD” EP is Kenny Pahina’s first release of the year. The five-track EP not only features fan favorite “Playas Never Die” (spelled “Playas Neva Die” on the EP), but also features the titular single, “Night of the Dead.”

Similarly to one of the themes of the EP – defiance against societal norms – the songs on “NIGHT OF THE DEAD” are eclectic in nature and provide listeners with sounds that they have never heard before. The “NIGHT OF THE DEAD” EP dives into societal woes, life’s struggles, and resiliency. The project is a vulnerable, introspective and extrospective body of work that urges listeners to find strength within, not succumb to disillusionment, and see through the mirage of materialism.

The EP kicks off with the titular record, “Night of the Dead.” The synth-laden record carries a triumphant sound that pairs well with the topic of the song – the topic being overcoming obstacles and hardships. Kenny Pahina’s emotive vocals do the song’s up-tempo beat justice. The EP then turns to another previously released record, “Playas Neva Die,” and one of my personal favorites on the EP. The song features Hunter Magno and has a chopped and screwed sounding hook. The track borrows elements from the Horrorcore genre. It highlights the commercialism and materialism rampant in society while also providing commentary on how they are used to mask the poverty within society. The record uses a variety of different vocal pitches; thus, trying to further the point of contrast. Track three, “PahinaRevive®,” is an interlude. It is an advertisement, which features ILENE and producer Svexx, that advertises an anti-aging product. The song serves as a commentary on pharmaceuticals, and society’s obsession/fear of aging and desperate desire to live forever/remain forever young. The penultimate song, “Blade,” produced by Svexx, is a Pop record with EDM flair that discusses age as well, but in a different way than “PahinaRevive®.” Instead of fearing aging or not wanting to age, “Blade” encourages listeners to embrace aging. The song plays upon the idea that “age is just a number,” and urges listeners to always keep their vitality and youthful joy. Kenny Pahina saves the best song for last (in my opinion). “Virus to Isolation” closes out the EP. The Grunge track is a duet with væ. “Virus to Isolation” is an angst-filled record that tackles racism and misogyny. Kenny Pahina’s vocal prowess really shines in this record, and it demonstrates the immense talent and versatility that Kenny Pahina possesses.

With deep, resonating lyrics and catchy instrumentation, the “NIGHT OF THE DEAD” EP is a five-track masterpiece. The multi-talented music artist takes listeners on a musical journey of exploration. The “NIGHT OF THE DEAD” EP already has fans craving more. Press play on the “NIGHT OF THE DEAD” EP and feel alive today!
