In an unexpected turn of events at the Grammy Awards on Sunday, rapper Killer Mike (Michael Santiago Render) found himself making headlines not just for his impressive three Grammy wins but also for an arrest on misdemeanor battery. The incident took place at Crypto.com Arena after the pre-televised segment of the ceremony.
Despite the legal hiccup, Killer Mike’s lawyer confirmed his release, stating, “He’s out and will be celebrating his sweep tonight.” The arrest was first brought to light by Chris Gardner of The Hollywood Reporter, who shared videos on X/Twitter capturing the rapper being escorted by LAPD officers in handcuffs around 4:22 p.m. PT.

Killer Mike’s triumphant night saw him clinching victories in all three categories he was nominated for. His track “Scientists & Engineers” featuring André 3000, Future, and Eryn Allen Kane won Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance, beating out notable contenders. Additionally, his sixth studio album, “Michael,” released in June 2023, secured the Grammy for Best Rap Album.
This marked Killer Mike’s return to the Grammy winner’s circle since 2003 when he snagged an award for his feature on OutKast’s “The Whole World.” Notably, he was also nominated in 2018 for “Chase Me,” a collaboration with his hip-hop duo, Run the Jewels. Despite the arrest, Killer Mike’s undeniable talent and Grammy success took center stage on a night that will be remembered for both his musical achievements and unexpected legal troubles.
