Kudos go out tenfold to rapper Trav B Ryan for such descriptive songwriting and vivid lyricism on his track “Save Me”, which is an eye-opener in terms of drawing attention within the hip-hop community to mental health.

I have heard other hip-hop tracks tackle the subject of mental health but they tend to focus strictly on the coping mechanisms, i.e. substance abuse and don’t present it in a clever lyricial fashion like he did with…”fake a smile just to get past, another liquor bottle in the trash, went so fast got whiplash”.

“Save Me” is very relatable for anyone who’s gone through a tough stretch in life. The hook is also extremely well written and equally performed by the talented female vocalist on the track. The angelic yet haunting tone of the chorus commands attention and is very memorable.

Also, the ending completely threw me for a loop, once again kudos to the songwriting. “My father died and that’s real, when I got the news, I ain’t even know how to feel, he was a stranger, yeah, sho nuff, at the funeral, I did like him, I aint show up.” Powerful lines with not one drop of profanity or vulgarity.
