Michael M Jeni is a multi-dimensional creative in the music space as the Iowa-based singer, songwriter, musician and recording artist of Rwandan heritage, has crafted a substantial catalog of AfroPop and AfroBeat singles such as standout tracks Relapse and Tokooos II.
Michael’s brand of AfroPop and AfroBeat has a distinct flavor that is uniquely his own. While the song contains a number of coyly suggestive lyrics and references to intimacy, it also takes a twist as Michael wants to make the point to the woman of his interest that his feelings go beyond just a physical desire as he reveals the type of feelings she invokes in him from an emotional standpoint.
“C’est Moi”
“C’est Moi” takes on a bit of a different vibe as the song touches on a woman who is not giving Michael any type of leeway with respects to moving forward with a romantic relationship. She has “put up walls”, possibly due to a prior bad relationship and this has also caused her to maintain some preconceived misconceptions of Michael’s character.
With that said, “C’est Moi” which is “it’s me” in English, Michael will not walk away without asserting the qualities he possesses that make him different from the average guy. He brings good intentions and wants to be there for her in everyway.
Michael accentuates the concept of the song with a dynamic vocal performance that’s expressive, and has an engaging feel that projects a genuine sentiment. Makes you want to root for him in his pursuit of this woman.
The production of “C’est Moi” maintains a soundscape utilizing more AfroPop/Afrobeat elements as it is driven by an infectious assortment of Afro influenced percussion patterns and the associated African drum instruments. They percussion rhythm is surrounded by an enveloping bass line and organ chord progression which brings out the melody of the song.

I’m Michael M Jeni, an AfroPop/AfroBeat artist based in Iowa and born in Idaho. Music has always been a part of my life since birth. I start and end my day with music every day. My love for music came at the age of 3 if I’m correct. My parents used to tell me stories that I would imitate dance moves, and singing from artists like Michael Jackson, and Koffi Olomide, and that’s where it all started. Even going through elementary to high school I played the violin, I was in the honours choir, and was able to learn music theory which helps with everything I do music-wise today. Fast forward to 2015, I lost my mother to cancer, I had to find different ways to channel emotions that I was feeling so I turned to writing music, and here we are today. Over time hearing people’s reactions to my music, and how it helped them through a situation, or how it inspires them, that’s what lets me know I’ve chosen the right path, no matter how long it takes. Music is my outlet to express myself and the things I go through, if I didn’t have music, I honestly wouldn’t be here and that’s a fact” My style of music is different, as mentioned before, my style is “AfroPop/AfroBeat, in Iowa, that is rare, my sound is rare and different, which I don’t mind, it’s me. I have to do what’s authentic and raw, and my African Rwandan heritage is me, minus the politics and issues in Rwanda. Growing up I was afraid to let my peers and others know was African, I was bullied because of it, but today I have a greater appreciation and understanding of my culture.”
Kevin James has over 20 years of experience in the entertainment industry in various facets. He has worked as a recording artist, songwriter, producer, on-air radio personality, background actor and film director. Kevin is a Member of the National Writer's Union.
