International supergroup BTS has announced via their label and management company Big Hit Music, that they will enter into a self-imposed hiatus as all seven members of the K-Pop band will be serving in the South Korean military, per the country’s conscription system.

South Korea mandates that all able-bodied men serve at least 18 months in the armed forces by the time they turn 28 years old. These mandates have been implemented particularly, due to the looming threats levied from North Korea over the years.

There are exemptions that are available for certain athletes and performing artists, however, all members of the group have elected to enlist in the military

Big Hit confirmed that Jin (Kim Seok-jin), who is 29 years old, will be the first BTS member to enter the military as he is the group’s oldest performer. The 29-year-old intends to enroll at the conclusion of his upcoming solo project which will be released later this month.

Ironically, the South Korean government had offered Jin a two-year delay in entering the army in 2020 when he turned 28. The exemption was offered in recognition of BTS’s contributions in “enhancing Korea’s international image.”; musically and culturally expanding the branding of the country on a global level.

With that said, Big Hit maintains that BTS plans to reunite as a group around 2025 after all members have completed their mandatory military service.

Since the creation of BTS over ten years ago, the band has risen to international success, broken records, and catapulted K-Pop into the global stratosphere. BIGHIT MUSIC has focused to the milestone moment when it would be possible to respect the needs of the country and for these healthy young men to serve with their countrymen, and that’s now.

Although the group had hinted of taking un unspecified break in a video clip from June, this news must still be pretty shocking to the legions of fans affectionately referred to as the BTS Army.

Even with a period of inactivity on the horizon, I firmly believe that the Army’s fervor for BTS will not wane…in fact, it may grow even stronger as fans immerse themselves in the expansive catalog of music and videos the group has released since their formation in 2010 and debut in 2013.
