1999The Dixie Chicks became the first country group to top the Billboard albums chart when their LP Fly debuted at #1.
1997The pitch-correction software Auto-Tune hit the market and soon became the industry standard in recording studios, especially after Cher hit #1 with her Auto-Tuned smash “Believe”.
1991Michael Jackson appeared as a guest voice on The Simpsons, where he played a mental patient that Homer befriended named Leon Kompowski.
1990Eddie Vedder was chosen as lead vocalist of what would become the formation of Pearl Jam after Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard and Mike McCready heard his demo tape. Vedder had added vocals to three instrumental tracks that the band had recorded.
1987The Grateful Dead hit #10 on the US Hot 100 with the single, “Touch Of Grey,” which would be the only hit song for the band.
1981Thanks to MTV airplay for their lead single “Start Me Up,” the Rolling Stones album Tattoo You surged to #1 in America, where it remained for an outstanding nine weeks. It actually turned out to be their last #1 album in the U.S.
1960Chubby Checker’s version of “The Twist” went to #1 in the U.S., while the original version by Hank Ballard & The Midnighters reaches its peak chart position of #28. Checker’s version soared again a couple of years later as it topped the chart again in 1962.
1952Legendary producer, guitarist and founder of The Chic Organization, Nile Rodgers was born in New York City.
