StreamLINE Music Review : SAYWHEN – “obsessed” (Emo-Pop, Alternative Rock)

The clever moniker SAYWHEN is the astute one-man concept and project of singer, songwriter and producer Christian Blake. The Cincinnati-based creative has established a name for himself in industry circles via his behind the scenes work as a producer and songwriter.
However, he has recently cultivated his extensive music background into a career as a solo recording artist which has blossomed rapidly since he stepped to the forefront with his debut release this year “stupid”.
SAYWHEN’s music is characterized by a distinct fusion of styles embedded within the alternative pop and rock sub genres including emo pop and industrial. The burgeoning artist continues his wave of momentum with the release of a new single titled “obsessed”, an exhilarating, yet cautionary tale on the seesaw of emotions one can experience when involved in a toxic relationship.
Touching on a very relatable topic, SAYWHEN conveys the sentiment of the track flawlessly with a coolly demonstrative vocal performance. His voice resonates so genuinely, it somewhat places your imagination right in the situation as his delivery has a subtle charisma which draws you into the storyline. Also, of note, I have to shed light on the awesome post-production as SAYWHEN’s vocals are basted in a bold reverb and short delay which amplify its innate presence.
SAYWHEN elaborates further on the background of the song as he shares, “obsessed” depicts a toxic relationship in which one person is fixated on someone who repeatedly hurts them. The lyrics express the feelings of confusion and frustration that come with being in that toxicity. Often, we are attached to the idea of the relationship, rather than the reality of it. We may cling to the hope that things will change, or we may simply be afraid to be alone. So we oftentimes lie to ourselves and make the conscious decision to stay.
Set to an instrumentation which boasts a prominent kick drum in a pattern similar to that of a heartbeat and a torrid arrangement of lead and rhythm guitar phrases , “obsessed” is brimming over with a provocative energy that SAYWHEN accentuates with intriguing lyrical content and the aforementioned dynamism in his singing.
I’m also floored by the tremendous mood shifts and transitions throughout “obsessed”. It can lull you in with an engaging, quintessential pop-toned sound and then segue into a blistering rock extravaganza in the hook without the least of a glitch. It just all seems to flow together.

SAYWHEN is the project of Cincinnati-based producer/songwriter Christian Blake, who combines alternative rock and emo-pop with a versatile vocal range that conveys angsty nostalgia and catharsis. The early 2022 release of ‘stupid’ saw SAYWHEN transition from behind-the-scenes producer and songwriter to a full-fledged artist, quickly growing a crazed, dedicated fanbase. His first show at the Madison Theater in Covington, KY opening for ENMY saw him bring 70+ fans of his own, some of whom flew in to see him perform. SAYWHEN has had several videos go viral on TikTok as well, including open verse challenges with Atlus and Sadie Jean that garnered 213k and 165k views respectively.
Blake was born into a musical family in Minneapolis where he had the opportunity to play any instrument he could get his hands on. With his deep passion and love for playing, Blake started touring with bands such as Spoken and Tooth & Nail’s XXI. Playing over 1k shows as a drummer and many more as a tech, sound engineer, and stagehand, he has been on the road non-stop. Utilizing the go-getter mentality he learned while on tour through the years, Blake is spending 2022 playing shows in and around the Midwest while releasing two new tracks ‘obsessed’ and ‘SUGARBABY.’
