Greenwood Music Collective Brings a Heavy Dose of Funk and Soul in New Track, “Freedom Fighter”
Led by guitarist and frontman Jack Quick, the Greenwood Music Collective is a dynamic group of seven talented musicians from the Seattle area. The music savants have compiled their individual skillsets and musicianship to form an eclectic outfit that composes music on the fringes on many genres; incorporating a magnetic blend of funk, rock, jazz, R&B and blues into their sound.
The burgeoning collective has released a pair of singles this year displaying said versatility, the firsts in what is sure to be many more to come. Today, we’re going to dive into their debut effort titled “Freedom Fighter”, an illuminating composition which is ultimately, a masterclass in musicianship and performance as it projects a genuine aura of the collective simply coming together for an all-out jam session.
The warm, free-flowing nature of all the instruments being played projects a comradery and positive vibes that were obviously present during the recording process. Greenwood Music Collective shares the following to elaborate on how “Freedom Fighter” developed into the magnificent piece that it is.
Born from a classic Jack Quick guitar riff, Freedom Fighter took on a life of it’s own as the band was jamming out early versions. The lilting funk groove, sax hits, and funky keys were all natural add ons. For vocals, the group took inspiration form the world’s only crime-fighting dolphin (Flipper), as Jack and Aimee started singing the hook “Freedom Fighter” during the bridge. A few iterations later the band collected a few inspirational samples from a YouTube rabbit hole viewing of John C Lily documentary called The Dolphin House and the far less celebrated George C Scott’s film The Day of the Dolphin. This track is a classic example of the alchemical process of GMC’s song creation.
A truly enjoyable listening experience, the soundscape of “Freedom Fighter” is buoyed by the eclectic mix of music styles I referenced above. It possesses a gritty and vintage soul feel, something that I envision as part of a soundtrack or climactic part in a 70’s film, particularly, when the rallying cry bellow of “Freedom Fighters!” enters into the picture.
A blistering guitar solo also seized my listening senses as you can almost feel each strum and hand movement up and down the fret. Energizing indeed! It’s all complemented extremely well also by some dazzling acrobatics on the Hammond keyboard and a flurry of perfectly timed transitions and mood shifts. “Freedom Fighters” is a track which envelops your interests from opening note to the end…. never a lull in the vibes.
“Freedom Fighter” is available on all streaming platforms and you can jam to it via the Spotify link below. Stream it on repeat, place it in your top playlists and save it to your Favorites for quick access.
