StreamLINE Music Review : AYSTA – “Up on the Rooftop” (Indie Rock)
Aysta is a burgeoning indie rock recording artist from the Midwest U.S. who is rapidly establishing his brand in music industry circles. He carries a distinct sound buoyed by a deep-toned rich, soulful vocal delivery that has resonated with listeners and tastemakers alike.
Building on the buzz created from such previous singles as “Jumpers”, Orange Slice” and Troubled Skin”, Aysta has jumped off 2022 with a spectacular new album release titled AYSTA Remastered. The album consists of seven tracks and today we are going to spotlight a gripping selection from the project titled “Up on the Roof”.
“Up on the Roof” is a stirring song and composition which touches on someone who is suffering in the throes of mental illness. He has certain delusions that are a reality in his mind, however, he knows they don’t actually exist.
Quite a conundrum for someone to be trapped in, and Aysta masterfully conveys the emotions and thoughts one would expect a person to experience having these type of mental health issues.
Aysta’s gritty, heartfelt vocal performance in “Up on the Rooftop” magnifies the impact of the song’s lyrics…it comes off as genuine and it truly sets up a protagonist in the song that you can easily empathize with and root for to overcome these challenges. The wistful, melancholic instrumentation serves as a perfect backdrop to the provocative lyrics.
“Up on the Rooftop” possesses a mellow soundscape that has a raw, industrial type of aura. It features a crisp guitar section that blooms into a blustery, slightly distorted roar as the hook comes in. It’s also complemented by a prominent percussion and rhythmically accentuated by a bevy of melodic synths. These electronic elements give the track somewhat of a retro vibe which takes me back to sound of the early 90’s.
“Up on the Rooftop” is available on all streaming platforms and you can listen to it via the Spotify link below. Stream it on repeat and save this insightful track to your Favorites Library for quick access. Lyrics for “Up on the Rooftop”
Up on the rooftop
I light up a smoke
I try to inhale
But sometimes I choke
Up on the rooftop
I preach to the street
I try to be quiet
But I know the verses Complete
Up on the rooftop
I talk to my friends
They aren’t really there
But I can pretend
Up on the rooftop
I cut my own hair
It’s long and dark
And some spots are bare
Up on the rooftop
I pray to a god
He isn’t concerned that my Thinking is flawed
Up on the rooftop
I have something sweet
She kisses my lips
So that I can retreat
Up on the rooftop
I yell at the cars
They gawk up at me
While I strum my guitar
Up on the rooftop
I think of her smile
She comes to me
But it’s been a while
Biting on the inside out
Part of me is full of doubt
Pacified I want to shout
Fighting what it’s all about
