One of the wonders of music is its ability to transport you mentally and sometimes, even physically, to another world, symbolically representing an alternate state of being. The latest album project “Onírica” by concept artist PHYTA possesses these awe-inspiring characteristics within its captivating compilation of five instrumental compositions.
The “Onírica” album encompasses a brilliant fusion of ethereal and ambient soundscapes which contain elements of the electronic, experimental and new age genres. The various components work in conjunction to form a unique bed of sound which PHYTA cleverly terms as “dreamscape”.
The beauty of instrumental pieces are that they are open to interpretation and the meaning one derives from a song can differ from listener to listener, however, PHYTA shares below how “Onírica” came to fruition, what factors influenced the flower species-inspired titles and the concept behind the profound symbolism that this project carries.
Onírica, represents the garden of fantasy, the garden of myths of the romantic and complete idea of what a garden is.
I was thinking of Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night Dream when creating this piece in particular because it has magical creatures. The album was recorded from ornamental plants in the garden of my cousin Nanis’ home, in Curico (Chile) and since it is a garden created for an environment of beauty and decoration during a sunny winter afternoon, it immediately took shape as a space of permanence and fun. Later while composing the sounds for what the organisms had written, I dived deeper into the concept of the ornamental garden until a Midsummer Night’s dream entered the scene and inspired the creation of this album. As a narrative of the time I thought about what a day would be like starting from dawn and those first rays of sun that hit the plants up to the center of the track when the sun hits more intensely until the end of the track when the day comes to sunset.
After repeat sessions listening to the album, the other-worldly dimension of the five songs manifest themselves subtly, however it is easy to become encompassed in the meditative and healing tones of the songs in “Onírica”. To me, they represent a rebirth of sorts and a path to self-development.
Songs such as “Tierra de Todos – Nani” and “Gomero – Ficus elastica” possess more of a cutting edge as they are infused with a more electronic instrumentation, however, overall, these songs are the type that can be utilized in a variety of scenarios. They can be enjoyed in meditation, quiet thought, study or just a quaint music listening session. The sonics operate on a frequency that exudes serenity and internal peace.
