The Bronx, NY based rap duo Morrison is a refreshing throwback to hip-hop’s glory days in the 1990’s when lyricism ruled the roost. Your bars had to be tight and dabble in a heavy load of clever wordplay, not to mention the vocal performance had to flow seamlessly within the construct of the beat.
Morrison consists of rappers Cargo Qell and Denim Davis and these two bring all that and then some as they carry their classic east coast rap sound to the contemporary hip-hop game, all the while keeping the style fresh so it resonates with hip-hop heads of all ages. Steady blazing mics, Morrison has been dropping underground tracks for almost a decade and in the course of doing so have built a substantial dedicated fanbase locally in the New York City area.
Just over the past year or so, the pair have disseminated their music to the wider group of established streaming platforms and today, we’re going to spotlight their latest release titled “Body Cleanse”. After absorbing this track it’s easy to come to the conclusion that Cargo and Denim are bona fide wordsmiths to say the least. The two deliver a bountiful dose of wordplay, potent punchlines and coy metaphors over a boom bap beat that pounds the soundscape with the classic heavy kick drum and piercing snare.
The production on “Body Cleanse” brings that core hip-hop feel while the underlying melody consisting of a smooth, soulful rhythmic phrase, is a nod to the musicality of the track. It puts you in the mind of any track off of Guru’s Jazzmatazz or A Tribe Called Quest type of jazz-infused beat, particularly in the grandiose fashion that Cargo and Denim slay the instrumental with their verbal gymnastics.
So hey! ultimately, “Body Cleanse” is an almost four and a half minute boommode listening experience from opening note and lyric to the end. The duo shares some further insight into the track as they explain that “Body Cleanse” is “a part of the Morrison Mondays collective. Every Monday stated, we drop songs for our cult following, with hopes to acquire more fans”.
