The enigmatic and expansive world of drone-based music is rather fascinating from an aural and composition standpoint as the effects of its tones can be encompassing to a listener – a sensation driven by the minimalist nature of its instrumental compositions, which are laden with a variety of ambient, sustained notes and sounds. Colorado musician Rees111 has crafted artistry that has expounded the virtues of the drone genre, and he has captured such in a recently released album project titled “tanden.”
“tanden” is a 7-track album, which is actually one of four that Rees111 has already released mid-way through 2022. The prolific artist’s intent with “tanden” is to “relay a sense of hope and options for various paths to be explored with an open mind”. The creativity behind these seven eclectic tracks was sparked by Rees111’s own self-journey and human realization.
As with any instrumental piece, the absence of words leaves the door open for the listener to interpret the music in whichever way they internalize and absorb the sounds….an impactful composition will easily conjure up mental images in your mind and activate your imagination.. Rees111’s “tanden” takes your mind on a virtual excursion on many levels with its enthralling soundscapes.
The tracks “draai” and “oplossen” have a meditative aura to them which creates a sense of serenity, something you would hear in those popular meditation YouTube videos or study/mental concentration enhancers. They also have a spiritual mystique which makes them sound like something that could be the background for Tibetan monk chants. “voorzitter’ contrasts those two songs as it features a thrashing, piercing instrumentation that percolates your ear drums. “voorwenden” and “blijven” conjure up images of the stars and planets for me as it virtually takes my thoughts on an intergalactic journey of exploration and discovery.
