As a member of Head Fake, Toronto native Michael Baker has been a key component in establishing the group’s distinctive and enigmatic sound. Michael has channeled the essence of this enigmatic approach to music with his new solo project that goes by the moniker Hasten Energy and its first release, a 3-song EP, is fittingly titled by the same name.

“Hasten Mercy” is a masterstroke sonically as it stands out as a scintillating expansion of the vintage 80’s sound in which Michael infuses with elements of contemporary pop and country. The EP’s soundscape is reminiscent of music from those memorable artists that dominated the 80’s pop scene such as Thompson Twins, Morrissey, Talking Heads and The Cure to name a few examples.

The three tracks of “Hasten Mercy” each tackle different concepts and maintain their individual tone and sonic character, however, are united in their incorporation of retro synths and a variety of appealing electronic melodies and underlying harmonics.

The EP’s opening track “Star You Are” is a bouncy, up-tempo 80’s top 40-type song…spright melodies amongst a host of cathodic instrumentation. Its tone is lofty and bright and exceptionally complemented by a positive, upbeat vocal performance by Michael. His vocals are tastefully gated and reverbed in line with that classic 80’s tone and project a genuine assuredness as the song’s concept asserts his ultimate in someone.

“These Things” is a departure from the light-hearted “Star You Are” as it takes on a more downcast vibe and theme, which is musically depicted by a brooding synth phrase and chord progression along with haunting claps. The song touches on a man who is happy with the person he’s with, however, he begins to question certain aspects of his character and personality which he believes may actually be a detriment to the other person. Michael adapts his vocal tone to a melancholic, reflective delivery and it accurately portrays the concept of the song.

The “Hasten Mercy” EP is capped off by an extremely introspective track titled “I Break Everything”. Emotionally intense, the song takes you into the mindset of a man who is conflicted with feelings which border on self-loathing to the point where he believes his shortcomings are so destructive that he leaves the person for their own benefit. Michael’s demure vocal delivery is a tremendous factor in conjuring up a mental image of these circumstances in your head.

“Hasten Mercy” is an incredible project and kudos go out to Michael Baker for a masterful job in tying the themes of the 3 songs together lyrically and musically. The EP is available on all streaming platforms (Spotify link below). Make sure to stream it! save it to your Favorites Library and share it on your social media platforms. Engage your listening senses for a provocative experience and nostalgic music journey back in time. Enjoy!

About Michael Baker of Head Fake

Married and uncertain of his future, a young Toronto native, Michael ignored the advice of his musical mentors and headed off to law school, eventually landing in New York City. With a young family and 18-hour workdays, music found its way into his home by singing his young daughters to sleep and exposing them to various genres and styles. Oozing originality, “Hasten Mercy” is destined to create waves by highlighting influences of the ’80s such as The Smiths and Stone Roses without changing the essence of his origin.
