Eight people have been confirmed dead and scores of others have been injured following a crowd surge Friday night at Travis Scott’s sold out Astroworld Festival in Houston on Friday night.

About 50,000 people were in attendance at the 2-day outdoor music festival at NRG Park, the stadium complex which houses the Astrodome and the NRG Stadium, when the tragic events occurred.

Officials also disclosed that more than 300 others were treated at a field hospital that was set up at a location near the festival. The Saturday night slate of performances has understandably been canceled.

According to reports from officials and first hand accounts from festival attendees, the crowd inexplicably surged towards the front of the stage as Scott began his performance, which resulted in the people up front being compressed and unable to escape the deadly crush.

Houston Fire Chief Sam Peña divulged that investigators will review video from the scene and assess the layout of the venue while determining if there were a sufficient amount of exit points established.

Peña further detailed that the investigation will seek answers to “what caused, one, the issue of the crowd surge, and two, what prevented people from being able to escape that situation.”

Travis Scott took to his Twitter account to express his devastation surrounding the tragic events.

“I’m absolutely devastated by what took place last night. My prayers go out to the families and all those impacted by what happened at Astroworld Festival. Houston PD has my total support as they continue to look into the tragic loss of life.”

Houston mayor Sylvester Turner also expressed his condolences to the families of those who were killed or injured via his Twitter saying “The city of Houston extends our condolences to the loved ones of 8 people killed & several injured at #ASTROWORLDFest. Organizers held the event to bring people together for music, but it sadly ended in tragedy. Thanks to police, fire & other agencies that responded to assist.”

Astroworld Festival organizers also took to social media to convey their sentiments via a heartfelt Tweet (Twitter post below). They also extended their gratitude to the Houston Police and Fire Departments for their swift response to the horrendous incident.
