Today’s LYRIC of the DAY features bars from De La Soul’s single “Me Myself & I” off their critically acclaimed debut album “3 Feet High and Rising”.
The single was a witty social commentary in which the hip-hop trio (Posdnuos, Trugoy the Dove, P.A. Pasemaster Mase) displayed their lyrical dexterity and knack for clever wordplay.
“Me, Myself & I” incorporates an infectious rhythm and samples throughout derived from the Funkadelic classic, “(Not Just) Knee Deep”.
The track reached the #1 spot on the Billboard U.S. Hot R&B/Hip-Hop as well as the Club Play chart and went on to be certified Gold by the RIAA.
It also surged to the top spot on various charts in the Netherlands while claiming spots in the Top 25 in such countries as Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany and the U.K.
The track was listed by VH1 as #46 on its 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop and it is included on The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.
