Kathryn and the Overbytes is an emerging pop/alternative/rock band from Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia, that formed in late 2019.
The band consists of Kathryn Ezzy (Lead vocals, bass), Tyson Lowe (Lead guitar), Corey Rusu (Guitar) and Joshua Spurr (Drums).
The band takes their unusual name from Kathryn’s rescue ex-racing greyhound who has an enormous overbite.
The “Y” in “Overbyte” harkens to the current digital age and produces a sort of symmetry in the name.
What’s the Scoop on “Please Tell Me”
Kathryn and the Overbyte’s first single, “Please Tell Me”, was released on March 5, 2021.
Please Tell Me was produced and recorded by Tyson and Kathryn, mixed by Yarn Muths (Yarn the Mix Artist) and mastered by Kamal Engels (Art of Audio).
Neither Tyson nor Kathryn stepped into a studio to record this track, it was all done on personal laptops in spare bedrooms with the minimal gear they had.
Please Tell Me is about the grey, uncomfortable and often unspoken area of relationships that is somewhere between friends and lovers.
The space this song describes is not “friends with benefits” but is the position one finds oneself in when they have fallen madly in love but do not know if the feeling is returned.
The songs also hints that the potential relationship may be forbidden or even foreboding.
The main plea of the song, as the title suggests, is “Please tell me, what are we? Because this is making me go crazy.”
The track also has an accompanying music video (link below) that was released to the band’s Youtube channel on the day of the release.
FoldMedia NT, a local Darwin music media organisation stated that “The music vid for their debut single ‘Please Tell Me‘ knocks the song into context – the grey, uncomfortable and often unspoken area of relationships that is somewhere between friends and lovers.
The vid evokes brooding confusion and a need for answers, all related back through the lens to the viewer.
What makes this video particularly noteworthy is the way it was shot – says vocalist Kathryn Ezzy:
“It’s completely a back yard job. We filmed it all on our phones and a GoPro and (guitarist) Tyson Lowe did the editing.” As simple as that, and what a result!”
