Yesterday, Federal prosecutors announced that charges were levied against two men accused of murdering Jam Master Jay, the legendary DJ and producer, and one-third of the groundbreaking rap group, RUN DMC.

Jam Master Jay, whose real name was Jason Mizell was shot and killed in 2002 inside a recording studio in New York City

Seth DuCharme, the acting U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York stated at a press conference that Karl Jordan Jr. and Ronald Washington had been charged with murder in Mizell’s death.

DuCharme did not elaborate on the background of what led to the charges but offered “today we begin to answer that question, who killed Jason Mizell and why.”

Newly filed court documents provide insight into the motives behind the killing.

The documents intimate that the killing was allegedly motivated over a broken drug deal.

According to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, prosecutors revealed that Mizell was involved in an operation that consisted of trafficking cocaine across state lines. Mizell had 10 kilos of cocaine that Ronald Washington was supposed to sell in Maryland.

Mizell reneged on the plan and informed Washington that he was being cut out of the deal. That apparently compelled Washington and Jordan to allegedly conspire to murder Mizell as a retaliation for the slight.

The two men then entered the studio the night of the killing and “ultimately executed Mizell,” according to court documents.

If and when charges are formally brought against Jordan and Washington, the two men face at least a 20-year prison sentence. Washington is already behind bars as he is serving time for an arm robbery he was involved in.
