Earlier this year, producer extraordinaire Ian Ewing released the single, “Gail.” He now returns with the EP, “Gail.” The “Gail” EP is a five-track project that features the titular song, “Gail,” a couple other fan favorites, and never-before-heard songs. Impressively, the EP marks Ian Ewing’s fourth EP released this year. The “Gail” EP showcases Ian Ewing’s versatility and dynamic production skills as he dabbles in Lo-fi, R&B, Electronica, etc. The EP also has a variety of featured artists that perfectly accentuate and blend with Ian Ewing’s sensational style/sound.

The ”Gail” EP kicks off with its processor and titular song, “Gail.” “Gail” is a smooth, wavy Lo-fi record that sets the tone of the EP. The EP then turns to “Views.” “Views” departs from instrumental-only and puts songstress Madeline Edwards’ vocals on full display. Madeline Edwards belts out beautfiful, soothing vocals, which are paired with Ian Ewing’s dulcet R&B/Soul production. Track three, “bubblebathbump,” goes back to Ian Ewing’s bread and butter as it is an instrumental. The track is laced with various mellifluous and unique samples and has a Boom Bap, Lo-fi backbone. “Call Out Work” is up next, and fans will rejoice as it was a lead single for the EP. Nic Hanson gets to work in “Call Out Work.” Crooner Nic Hanson absolutely shines in the record. The song has a Silk Sonic feel to it and is my personal favorite on the EP. It is the epitome of what good – scratch that – great music should sound like. From the lyrics to the production to the vocal performance, “Call Out Work” is immaculate. The final song is “Ships Passing,” and is a great closer. The record is a downtempo song that features vocalist McCall. Ian Ewing also enlisted Finnish instrumentalist cocabona for the track.

Self-taught instrumentalist Ian Ewing is a force to be reckoned with. His producing skills are next level, and it is no wonder that he has amassed millions of streams and was able to collaborate with renowned talents such as Mick Jenkins, Galimatias, and Cautious Clay. It is a shame that the year is coming to a close because there will be no more new music this year from Ian Ewing, but thankfully, the gift of “Gail” is one that keeps on giving as it has much replay value.
