Mandi Macias is a rapidly emerging recording artist out of Los Angeles, who is primed to carve out a unique niche and brand which will have a clear cut impact on the music industry for many years to come.

The young prodigy’s artistic talents span the gamut of the entertainment field as she is a singer, songwriter, performer and actress. Mandi’s background in music developed early in her formative years and culminated in the release of her debut EP in 2018 at the remarkable age of 16, with a 5-track project fittingly titled “Sixteen”.

Mandi has crafted a flourishing catalog of music since her debut, which includes a variety of single releases that have performed extremely well across the major streaming platforms such as “You Right Now“, “Take You Home” and last year’s smash release, “When You Were a Virgin“.

Mandi possesses a dynamic musical palette which she manifests into an eclectic style that can overall be categorized as Pop if you were only allowed to define her music with one genre. However, as you make your way through Mandi’s various releases, you will quickly take notice how she incorporates an appealing blend of indie pop, rock, synth pop, R&B and electronic music into her songs.

The diverse fusion of genres gives Mandi a distinct sound that is tremendously refreshing in an industry where many artists attempt to emulate others, however, it’s clear Mandi embraces pushing the envelope musically and expressing her true self unabashedly.

Thoughts on “Teenage Eulogy”

That brings us to the spotlight of today’s review as I had the pleasure of listening to three songs off of Mandi’s upcoming “Teenage Eulogy” EP which is set to drop later this month on April 28. The EP is an introspective and deeply personal project in which Mandi touches on a variety of self-reflective topics and circumstances that are extremely relatable to a wide demographic – – – and songs that can in fact, also serve as a source of inspiration to those experiencing similar emotions.

Mandi shares, “I wanted to create an EP that captures the emotions and experiences of transitioning from a teenager to becoming a woman. It’s a period of growth, change, and self-discovery, and I wanted to share my journey with others who may be going through the same thing.

The three songs off of the EP I listened to capture Mandi’s signature sound which is an amalgamation of all the styles referenced above, but the tracks definitely have a leaning towards the indie pop and alt rock space.

Let me begin with the title track, “Teenage Eulogy”, which really highlights Mandi’s adept songwriting abilities. It’s a clever song and composition that symbolically stands as a transition from the teenage years to adulthood. The lyricism makes coy references throughout and I take it as laying a younger mindset to rest… it’s a musical obituary on a younger period in life while advancing to another stage.

A driving guitar riff and a crashing percussion section leads the cutting edge production and Mandi’s evocative vocal performance is absolutely striking, matching the raw energy of the instrumentation. Mandi’s voice resonates with such a commanding tone that it easily gravitates you to the song and as such, she conveys the theme of the track extremely well in a sharp, authentic manner.

Then there’s the track titled “Tell Me It’s Okay”, which boasts an ethereal electro pop/synth pop mystique while tapping into elements of rock as it contains a blistering set of lead guitar melodies, particularly throughout the hook and towards the outro. The song touches on a person experiencing a number of challenges internally that are filled with conflicting feelings, self-doubt, anxiety etc., however, not wanting to be judged in any particular way for expressing such feelings…..but empathize. Mandi injects a more dramatic, cinematic tone vocally in this song which heightens the listener’s sense in understanding the level of feelings she’s speaking on. Outstanding performance!

The third song, “You Ain’t A Man” is another masterful songwriting piece as Mandi boldly declares all the reasons that she’s at the point in life that she now requires a certain level of maturity when it comes to what she looks for in a mate. She has no patience to deal with a mental “man-child”, someone without aspiration, goals etc. The track takes on a more downtempo pace and showcases the potency of Mandi’s gripping vocals and dynamic range. The song has a gritty soundscape and has a decidedly alternative, garage rock sound in my opinion that matches Mandi’s confidently defiant vocal delivery.

“Teenage Eulogy” is destined to be a seminal piece in Mandi’s discography. It possesses so many enthralling components which will make it a spectacular listening experience. It’s extremely impressive how Mandi tackles such serious, personal concepts while also providing moments of levity, charisma and entertainment within the midst of the profound lyricism.
