Set to an enthralling dream pop soundscape infused with a vintage 1960’s mystique and background harmonies, Mandy Slate’s new single “PAPERCUT HEART” is a dazzling song and composition which delivers a magnetic blend of contemporary music and a dose of nostalgia. The song also boasts an exquisite vocal performance by Mandy which she has exhibited equally on her previously released singles I Know You Know and Loveblind.
So let’s dive into this track! The title of the song itself is intriguing before you even hear a single note. It makes you wonder, is it going to be a ballad, a bold break-up song or a let’s get back together track? Who has the PAPERCUT HEART?
But what ‘PAPERCUT HEART” is, is a masterstroke in songwriting as Mandy touches on the relatable frustrations of dating someone who is not fully invested in the relationship…just getting by so to speak or as she explains “doing the bare minimum”, however, the person has not actually done anything overtly wrong to cause any hurt. I love the symbolism as a papercut is the slightest of wounds yet it can be extremely painful.
It’s quite a conundrum to be in and Mandy’s dynamic vocal performance captures the essence of the rollercoaster emotions and confusion such circumstances would bring in a person’s life. She carries a softly, charismatic and engaging tone to the song while also seamlessly being able to express a lament when singing on the low points of the romance.
Mandy shares, “The sound is inspired by electronic bedroom dream pop and 60’s girl groups and I wanted it to feel playful and defeated at the same time“.
Her vocal acrobatics are a true listening experience as her voice swiftly struts up and down the vocal range, particularly within the hook. As I referenced above, the ethereal, dreamy instrumentation in “PAPERCUT HEART” is a wonderful complement to the lyrical content and stands out as a top notch production overall.
