Having carved out a unique niche in their respective musical lanes, recording artists Levi Zadoff and Dead Hendrix have combined their immense individual talents to form a dynamic tandem. Levi Zadoff is based on the West Coast in the U.S., primarily L.A. and San Francisco, and Dead Hendrix is from Ottawa, Canada.

The newly formed duo brings their one-of-a-kind punk fusion sound to the forefront with the release of a seminal EP project titled “Dead Summer”. The EP is a 5-track collection of songs that touches on the variety of emotions experienced and dire circumstances that existed during the height of the global COVID pandemic.

As such, the EP’s title “Dead Summer”  is symbolic in a couple of ways as it refers literally to the overwhelming number of deaths that COVID caused and it also represents the death of the economy, social interaction, mental health struggles and trauma resulting from the mass shutdowns and lockdowns.

Incorporating an invigorating blend of pop, punk, rock and rap with a provocative, introspective lyricism, “Dead Summer” delivers the electrifying punk fusion vibe that the duo is known for, while also vividly taking the listener down memory lane with its relatable, authentically raw themes and perspectives on the pandemic.

COVID impacted everyone around the world, and we all experienced it in different ways, either the angst, uncertainty, grief, need to self-medicate, or mental health challenges that the EP touches on. There’s definitely some lyric or phrase which will make a listener say something like, “that’s exactly what I was going through.”

The EP begins with a dose of witty sarcasm in the opening track, “Dont Think It Could Get Much Better.” I take this track as being exasperated with the state of affairs, but when you sit back and take an overview of things, you get some glimmer of hope as you come to the conclusion that things can’t actually get worse.

“Alone” is a song that speaks on the debilitating solitude and isolation that many experienced during the pandemic. Lines such as “I don’t even know where I’m at”….”I’m tired of being alone”….”I’m tired of getting stoned” paint a clear picture of where the track is going.

“Cant Be God” is an intriguing track as the duo comes to terms with the realization that they can’t obsess on matters that are outside of their control. Every aspect of your life cannot be planned out; however, you can put yourself in the best possible situation to flourish in life. I liken it to the pandemic that has turned life upside down, but you must do your best to maintain your health and sanity and persevere forward.

“Love Game” is another relatable song dealing with the turmoil of love thrown in the midst of all the other issues surrounding the pandemic. Many couples were put to the test as some were separated long-term or you had others who experienced the opposite scenario and were forced into quarantine all day, every day.

Lastly, the EP concludes with a bonus track “Teenage Dirtbag”, a reflective song in which the two reminisce on mischievous teenage ways, a period before the world went haywire in a global health crisis.
