The Grunge era was born at the end of the 80s in Seattle, Washington. The early 90s spread albums that featured the dirty guitar distortion, heavy-hitting drums on minimal kits, lyrics, and vocals fueled by angst and raw power of the Seattle sound (better known as Grunge music) all across the globe.

Here are the four all-time greatest among those albums.

4. Nirvana; Nevermind

nirvana - nevermind

Nevermind was Nirvana’s sophomore album, but was the first to be on a major label. The album debuted on September 4, 1991, from DGC Records. It features chart-topping tracks like “In Bloom,” “Come as You Are,” and Nirvana’s most successful masterpiece, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Vigorous, thundering drums, fervent, power-hungry basslines, and evocative, dynamic guitar riffs and chords dominate the tracklist. However, there are undertones of hardcore punk rock found in a couple of tracks, as well as acoustic slow-jams included in the song list. The harmony between frontman Kurt Cobain’s voice and the supporting vocals of his bandmates is deep, dark, and demands the devout attention of the listener.

3: Stone Temple Pilots; Core

stone temple pilots - core

Under the Atlantic Records label, STP made a strong entrance with their debut album, Core, on September 29, 1992. This album is either the most adored or the most despised in the band’s discography. The tracklist includes “Creep,” “Wicked Garden,” “Plush,”(which was a huge hit,) and “Sex Type Thing.” The band felt serious heat from the severely controversial lyrics of multiple tracks on this album. The cringe-worthy words are intended as an authoritative expression of the topics no one wanted to discuss. The impassioned voice of Scott Weiland exposes the realities of sexual assault, obsessive co-dependency, and domestic violence. Backed by wicked powerhouse drum hits, vehement guitar punches, and a seductive, thrusting bassline, Weiland’s sinewy, full-throat vocals deliver the epic and iconic grunge sound.

2: Alice in Chains; Dirt

alice in chains - dirt

Alice in Chains released Dirt under the Columbia record label on September 29, 1992. What a great day for grunge, right? All over the world, teens, young adults, and the young at heart were chilled and thrilled by the unparalleled harmony between the voices of Layne Steely and Jerry Cattrell. Some of the songs from this album have become infamously iconic including: “Them Bones,” “Down in a Hole,” and “Rooster.” Throughout the album, lyrics filled with anger and disgust expose the ugliest parts of war, sick or toxic romance, and addiction. Although Dirt’s tracklist is characterized by brutal and twisted lyrics, the image they create resonates deep in the soul of listeners.

1: Pearl Jam; Ten

pearl jam ten

While this album is the final list item, it was the first to be recorded and released. Pearl Jam released their debut album under Epic Records on August 27, 1991. Ten features a few of the most legendary grunge tracks ever heard on the air. Intense opening riffs and hard-hitting basslines are accompanied by awkward timing from the band’s drummer, David James Abbruzzese as well as the booming baritone vocals of the grunge god, Eddie Vedder. Songs like “Alive,” “Jeremy,” “Even Flow,” and “Black” show off the band’s ability to navigate a fluid transition from wild and animalistic, to soulfully somber.
