A persistent source of angst amongst producers and engineers is rooted in harnessing the low end of a mix, particularly when there are multiple elements on the low end competing against each other….more specifically, a song containing a kick drum, bass and 808’s.
The challenge arises from being able to define the low end elements with the appropriate amount of cut or boost EQ’ing so the instruments are heard with clarity without muddying up the mix or muffling the accompanying instrumentation.
In the YouTube video below, YouTube content provider George T Music provides an incredibly insightful video which shows famed producer Mixed by Ali (Gunna, Kendrick Lamar) demonstrating various techniques, tips and guidance on how he mixes his kicks, bass and 808’s. In addition, Mixed by Ali also displays the plugins he utilizes so this video is an all-around learning bonanza for any producer, beatmaker, engineer or audiophile.
