Memphis, Tennessee has been the hometown of several prominent rappers such as Yo Gotti, Juicy J, Project Pat, Blac Youngsta and the late Young Dolph. The southern city with a gritty, hard edge is also the birthplace of a rapidly rising rapper on the underground scene who goes by the name of Kazi Moretti.

Kazi brings a raw, authentic lyricism to his songs which channels his life experiences, particularly the trials and tribulations he’s encountered throughout life. Kazi masterfully details such experiences in his introspective songwriting and conveys them equally with a distinct vocal delivery which resonates with a presence in the alternative rap space.

Kazi has been actively releasing music for about three years and has already amassed a couple of mixtapes and a number of EP’s in his expanding catalog. Today we’re going to spotlight a track titled “god preacher” off of his recently released 4-track Marble Mushroom EP. “god preacher” carries the signature uniquely crafted alternative rap sound that has come to define a typical Kazi Moretti track. “god preacher” also features the vocals of rapper Drury Walker.

Kazi explains how the track and concept developed as he shares, “I was coming off my sophomore tape, Relish the Illusive, and wanted to make something fresh and new. Loved the production that I helped put together and ended up sending it to my homie Drury Walker who’s an underground guy who got a few tight songs. Became instantly timeless when I received his verse from the track“.

The instrumental of “god preacher” distinguishes itself immediately with its one-of-a-kind soundscape which incorporates a soulful vocal interpolation and rhythmic sample which conjures up thoughts of nostalgia as it takes your mind back to the 70’s R&B/soul classics. It has a cinematic flair to it, almost, like it could have been in a soundtrack of one of the classic Black 70’s films like Shaft, Black Caesar or The Mack to name a few.

Kazi accentuates the distinct production with his matter of fact, deep baritone style flow that grips your attention in a commanding way. There’s no pretense or false bravado, just a man kicking bars, expressing his genuine self and thoughts. Refreshing to hear! Then when Drury follows with his higher pitched, more animated flow, it creates a perfect contrast that sets “god preacher” apart from its counterparts in the industry.

More About Kazi Moretti

  • As posted by Kazi Moretti

I’m a young rapper/poet from Memphis, TN. I didn’t grow up in the best of neighborhoods but ended up really enjoying rappers like MIKE, Earl Sweatshirt and guys like MF DOOM. Those kinds of rappers helped me find an outlet to display my hardships and pain throughout my life. I’ve been doing music for around three years describing my emotions and reflecting on the battles that life has given me up to this point. Being a young black male in his early 20’s can take a toll on anyone. I have around 2 tapes and multiple EPs, which are on my Bandcamp and SoundCloud. I’m looking to make a huge boom in the underground scene I’m not going anywhere anytime soon. My recent music takes a dive on my mental after the loss of my grandfather last year.
