Quon, formerly known as Young Quon, is a Louisiana-born rapper and recording artist who injects his penchant for old-school rap in the tracks he creates; unapologetically displaying a leaning for the classic hip-hop in the instrumentation and rap style. Quon brings a flow and disposition to the mic that harkens back to an era that many fondly consider the golden era of the genre in the 90’s, when lyricism and content were the priority. Quon’s musical influences include seminal artists such as Jay Z, Too $hort, and Tupac, so that gives you a glimpse into how his artistry and stylings as an emcee developed.

Quon carries this vibe to his latest single titled “Ain’t A Boss,” a captivating track that blows the roof off with a boom mode instrumental and stone-cold bars. “Ain’t A Boss” contains a distinct fusion of sonics that touch on a variety of retro-hip-hop styles of music. The bassline and emphatic drum track that drives the track is a rhythmic and funky combination, reminiscent of the west coast sound. The ambient phrases and melodies incorporated throughout present a theatrical air over the track similar to the southern style.

As the production on “Ain’t A Boss” distinguishes itself with its music presence, Quon sets the microphone ablaze with a self-assured and commanding vocal performance. Quon’s voice rings across the soundscape in a bold fashion that comes off as 100% authentic and gives the listener tremendous insight into his persia and related craft as a rapper. The ad-libbed opening lines of the song let you know right away that Quon’s commitment to staying true to his musical roots is far from a ruse.

“I just kept on making the kind of records that the people down where I live at like. I feel like if you can make your own little time bruh and if you can make the people in your neighborhood jam, you can make everybody love it. You just stay true to it even when you know, everybody else was doing some different things.”

Poignant indeed….Quon’s monologue sets the track up on its hard edge path from the outset. The intro actually can serve as a motivation for any artist struggling with establishing their individual artistic vision vs. maintaining a facade or music catalog to conform to the sound that’s “happening” at the moment…and we all know that shifts every couple of years. Quon brings a refreshing style to today’s hip-hop game and it will resonate with classic hip-hop heads as well as fans of the genre seeking to bop to a different type of sound.

“Ain’t A Boss” is available on all streaming platforms and is accompanied by a music video that is equally resounding (Spotify and YouTube links below).  Stream the track on Spotify, drop it in your playlists and share it on your social media platforms. Of course, hit the thumbs up on the YouTube music video and leave a comment…subscribe to the channel! Enjoy!

More About Quon

Dequon Stovall, professionally known as Quon, is a recording artist born in The Big Easy. Raised in Arizona and Texas, for the most part, he found himself embarking on the musical path when he was a teenager. Quon was seen rapping around friends and performing open mic at clubs in the area. Nostalgic for hip-hop’s golden era, he draws inspiration from the pioneers like UGK, Jay Z, Too $hort, and Tupac. He also collaborated with big names in the hip-hop scene like Paul Wall, Kidd Kidd, E-40, and Lil’ Keke under his former byname, Young Quon. Quon’s music is confident, versatile, and playful and will certainly find a welcome home amongst fans of old-school hip-hop, whether old or young heads.
