Minneapolis recording artist speakeazie is a talented creative who brings a clear-cut uniqueness to the fold with her eclectic vocal stylings. She projects an inimitable vibe and atmosphere over a song that spans the wide spectrum of pop and its subgenres including alt pop, bedroom pop and dream and indie pop respectively.
speakeazie continues to exhibit her penchant for pushing the envelope and skillfully blurring the creative boundaries genres can sometimes set forth as we’re going to spotlight a new project of hers titled “I’m a Wreck, Not a Queen”. Full disclosure here… I was intrigued by the title alone before even hearing a note of the song so I was brimming with anticipation to hear the actual song and what an awesome listening experience it is.
“I’m a Wreck, Not a Queen” captures the quintessential signature dream pop, wavy type of instrumentation, lo-fi undertones, almost out of this world in a virtual reality as the music wistfully leads you along as speakeazie’s hazy and melodically alluring vocals take centerstage; it’s a reflective tone and timbre, yet very soulful. Her vocal delivery is dynamic in the seamless manner in which she transitions her voice to fit the sentiment of the lyrics as well as the accompanying inflections, pitch bending and distinct fashion she enunciates some of her words. It’s easy to get caught up in her voice as it figuratively seems to float above the music.
So, now that we’ve highlighted what a spectacular track this is musically and vocal performance, let’s spin back to my initial source of intrigue…what is the concept of “I’m a Wreck, Not a Queen” all about?!? speakeazie dives into the theme of the song as she explains the song “is about being broken and going out on the town one night to drink. Instead of finding just the bottom of a glass, you end up finding someone instead that could accept the broken parts of you no one has before”.
