The seminal Pittsburgh rock band Little Wretches, led by frontman and co-founder Robert Wagner (his brother Chuckie was also a co-founder and played violin in the band), garnered much success and built a massive following during the indie glory days of the 80’s and 90’s.

Wagner served as the chief songwriter, vocalist and guitarist for the group in their heyday and while the core band disbanded in the 90’s, Wagner has carried on the legacy prominently as he still continues to release new music under the Little Wretches moniker and performs at coffeehouses and small clubs.

Following the international success of the 2020 album release, “Undesirables and Anarchists,” Wagner released a live, 24-track acoustic album this July titled Live at the Mattress Factory – Songs from the Land of Pit Bulls & Poker Machines which features the track in today’s spotlight “All of My Friends (LIVE)”

The original, acoustic set was recorded amongst an intimate gathering of friends and fans, as a way to
showcase what Wagner’s solo shows are all about—audience interaction and connection.

Wagner said about the project and performance, “I really want listeners to be drawn to the detailed lyrics and the themes of the songs,” says Wagner. “How they evoke the lives of people in post-industrial river towns, turning the folklore of Joe Magarac on its head, to portray REAL life in a working-class ghetto, honoring the faithful resilience of people tough enough to survive in such locales.”

“All of My Friends (LIVE)” has a refreshing and vibrant tonality that makes it more reminiscent of the folk leanings that the early renditions of Little Wretches created musically. Wagner was joined by Dave Maund, an extremely skilled and dexterous cellist, who had played with the Little Wretches in the past.

The song quickly displays its engaging appeal as Wagner delivers a hearty, melodic vocal performance over the mellow acoustic instrumentation. Wagner’s smooth cadence and mostly even-keel delivery add a welcoming presence overall and I’m sure that was even further enhanced by the intimate live setting.

Wagner masterfully conveys the song’s concept as he delves into a distinct storytelling mode with a cool aplomb. He wryly reflects on a variety of situations and people and their particular circumstances. Listening, it reminds you of a group sitting around a camp fire exchanging stories.

Overall, the aural energy of the song coupled with Wagner’s genuineness makes for a very compelling live rendition. Listen to “All of My Friends (LIVE)” below and don’t miss the opportunity to check out the entire live album.

Memorable Quote by Robert Wagner

My songs are mirrors, and I often begin or end my performances by playing a version of The Velvet Underground’s “I’ll Be Your Mirror” extended to more than ten-minutes in length to include some of the images that most shaped my view of the world as a young man—working men and women enslaved in pursuit of the dollar, the now-vacant void from whence the spirit fled filled with the distraction of mindless entertainment, alcohol and assorted drugs, people so numb that self-destructive violence has lost its impact and the only way they can hope to feel anything is to hurt the people they love…God wanted me to grow up to defend the weak and vanquish the evil- doers by writing songs and telling stories. And if I’m wrong, I’ve wasted my life. – Robert Wagner
