  • Hi Flo, welcome to StreamLINE! Thank you for taking some time out to speak with us about your artistry and music career. We’re looking forward to our audience learning more about you. Thank you for sharing your story. We appreciate it!
  • Please tell us a bit about your background, where you’re from etc.  What were your early music influences?

Hellooo! Thank you for having me!!! I am newly 23, born and raised in southeast London. My earliest musicial influences were literally pop music, I loved early 2000s stuff. Kate Nash and Lily Allen were big influences from the start but I mean I loved Britney, Gwen Stefani, P!nk, Kesha, Avril Lavigne.

It was only when I was about 17 though that I think I really developed my own music taste. What my dad had listened to suddenly became really good and I was like “hold up why did I ignore this for so long” (The Beatles, Queen, Blondie, Billy Joel to name a few) I feel like that was when I really started actively wanting to discover new music and also older music that I had overlooked for so long.

Don’t get me wrong though, I feel those were a big influence when I was younger, even if I didn’t realize it as that was what was playing in the car and around the house.

  • What would you say was the defining moment when you decided to pursue and record music professionally?

You know, I think I always knew I was going to entertain. Nothing else really stuck; at school that was what I did.

I wasn’t ever really interested in much else but it was at 17 I think (when I started to discover this whole new world of music) that I just became inspired to write, learn the guitar a bit to be able to write on my own and learn more about playing live that I knew it was going to be more than just a hobby.

  • Please tell us about your latest single “Up” and the story behind it. How did it all come together?

“Up’ is about celebrating individuality. It’s about being the odd one out but feeling super content with that, it’s about being beautifully weird.

When you feel a bit different to the people next to you, whether that be at school or work or even just at the supermarket, in some cases you might try to be something you’re not in order to feel like you’re fitting in and complying with social norms.

Everyone should embrace their unique selves that is what makes the world so special and exciting. I have always been what I call a ‘marmite person’ (you get it or you don’t). We just liked the concept of that so based the song lyrics around it. My friends call me the Phoebe of the group so that is where that line came from too.

  • The “Up” video is filled with a collection of extremely lively and captivating visuals. How did the concept come about? Looked like it was a blast to shoot as well, lots of fun! How was it filming?

I was very lucky to work with Choreographer, Adam Murray on this. He has worked on the Rocketman film, Ready Player One, the new Cruella and so many more so I knew I was in safe hands. He didn’t only choreograph the dance but also really helped with my movement throughout the entire video.

We wanted to incorporate a dance into it because it is the sort of song that makes you want to move and boogie (I hope) and had some amazing dancers who brought this to life. It was filmed over 2 days and honestly it was hilarious on set, we had a really funny time.

Dean Sherwood filmed and directed too, I worked with him on the Chasing After You video so he knows me and what I do and don’t like and we work really well together. I do have to say it was as fun as it looked to film. Such an amazing team of people.

  • What sparks your songwriting creativity?. Is your creativity inspired by certain events, things you experience personally or is it just more of a natural vibe that you get?

To be honest it completely varies, you’ll be sat there and someone could say something or your brain thinks something and I just write it down. There’s just triggering things, for example- if someone says something weird, memorable or that sounds like a good song title then you just work around that. Or to be honest if something happens that makes me sad or happy that is normally the inspiration.

I like to be very honest so I think that’s why I do write things down to try and keep it all personal and something I can look back on like a diary. I have bad days though, even months of not being able to think of what to write. It comes and goes in waves, it really does and it’s hard to explain.

  • You have a recurring podcast on Instagram as well! What brought about the idea to do Chats on the Flo? What type of artists and music professionals have you had on? What kind of experience has it been hosting your own show?

Chats on the Flo was introduced because I was working with or knew of cool people who were doing all this amazing stuff but no one really knew the ins and outs of it (unless you were mates with them or work within their sector).

What I wanted was a space where I could chat to creatives who are doing stuff but mostly behind the scenes. They’re doing the things that we don’t see yet benefit from. I just find it so interesting. Like, I had Patch (the producer of ‘Up’ on the other day because what he does really is amazing. We’re back in making another song at the moment and just watching him and how his brain works is mind blowing.

I now do have some artists on because to be honest if I think you are interesting in any way shape or form I wanna talk to you and its fun to chat to like-minded creative people, they’ve all got a different story about how they got to where they are and why they love it.

  • Chasing After You” is another spectacular song you’ve released this year. Please tell us how that song developed and the recording process. Also, the Rob Savage Remix of the original is equally smashing with a big time house vibe. How did the remix come about?

This song is potentially my favourite that I have ever released. The lyrics in this song are really honest to what I was going through at the time of writing but when we wrote it I never knew how the produced track would sound.

This song was the first I ever recorded and it was with Tom Fuller. I tracked him down at a Christmas Party one year and convinced him to work with me. He picked to do this one first and he really made the ‘Flo Gallop Sound’. It was such an exciting time and again we really did have a lot of fun during the production period. It was the coolest thing ever to watch a song which had been scribbled down on paper journey to being what you hear on the track now.

Lastly, Tom put some really cool elements in like steel drums he’d recorded off his phone in San Francisco and Sesame Street character sounds. That is one thing I absolutely love about the song. Rob Savage then made the remix, this was such a random coincidence but my manager went to school with him so we managed to convince him to work with us!

  • What has been your most memorable experience performing live thus far? What do you enjoy most about performing in a live setting?

Genuinely it might have been the other day. I played at The Ned (a swanky hotel in London). It was such a cool gig, the room is just enormous and the stage is right in the centre so you’re singing on this round raised platform, bandstand thing.

The audience were amazing and singing along and it was just really good vibes all round. What I enjoy most is just being able to dance around the stage completely carefree… there’s no other feeling like it.

  • Speaking of performing, what is the best concert you have ever attended in person?

AHHHHH THATS SO HARD! It’s got to be Tom Grennan when I saw him for the first time (I’ve now seen him loads because I’m obsessed) but this was at Brixton Academy and it was on my birthday. My favourite singer was playing on my birthday so we went and just had the best time ever.

I do just have to say how hard that question is to answer though lol. I love live music and so many different gigs have been good for so many different reasons!!!

  • What hobbies and interests do you have outside of your music endeavors?

I love cooking and baking, social media, makeup and fashion. I like exploring. I’m kind of up for anything. If it’s with fun people I’m there lol.

  • In your opinion, how has social media benefited recording artists?

Wow like so much, I was talking about this the other day actually. We now all have our own platform to show what we do, what we like, who we are.

Obviously it has its negatives and in my opinion you have to take everything you see with a pinch of salt as everyone is always only going to show their best self so it can be quite demoralizing if you’re having a bad day or not feeling good about yourself but I honestly have a lot of thanks to social media for the opportunities it has brought me and the people I have met through it.

For me it was a complete life saver throughout lockdowns as you still could use your platform to virtually gig and interact with other creatives and basically make stuff happen.

  • What’s next up musically for you as 2022 approaches and beyond? Any projects, features or live shows on the horizon?

More songs, more videos, more fun on social media but most importantly for me MORE GIGS!!!!!

I am feeling so excited to be back doing this all and this time, with released music!!! (I hadn’t released before the pandemic). So yeah, that is all rrrrealllyyyyy exciting! If you’re reading this go go go & stream, come to a gig soon, I would love to meet you (I’ll buy you a beer) & tell ur pals!!!!
