Soulful Femme is a highly decorated Pittsburgh-based duo consisting of dynamic vocalist Stevee Wellons and three-time winner of the prestigious Best Blues Guitarist Award (formally named the Jim Weber Award), Cheryl Rinovato.
Stevee and Cheryl have both received widespread acclaim individually throughout their extensive careers so it is no surprise that their pairing has resulted in a tremendous debut effort titled “It Is Well With My Soul”.
The 12-track album, recently released June 4 this year, is a dazzling assortment of music crafted with an indelible blues, funk and jazz fusion.
That immersive sonic blend is at the forefront of today’s feature single off the album, “40 Under” featuring the work of virtuosa guitarist, Joanna Connor.
“40 Under” is a standout track as it combines the elements that characterize Soulful Femme’s versatile palette but it also incorporates a hefty presence of hard rock components; something of an industrial, gritty feel.
The song begins with a lush instrumentation of winding guitars in the distance as Stevee applies her bold and commanding vocals.
As the track progresses to its first buildup, a hefty percussion drops in as the foundation to the bevy of lead and background guitar rhythms.
The composition and arrangement must be applauded as together they paint an evocative picture of the song’s concept while also driving the overall timbre of the soundscape.
Stevee’s exquisite vocal performance flows effortlessly across the hard-edged instrumental. She does a masterful job navigating the intricate guitar riffs Cheryl and Joanna lay down.
And of course, as one would expect with this level of skilled musicianship playing on the song, the guitar solo section is absolutely enthralling and personally made me go back repeatedly to hear it over and over.
Soulful Femme, dare I say it, has the makings of a fruitful, long term collaboration with loads of new music for years to come.
