Today’s LYRIC of the DAY features a thought provoking bar delivered by Talib Kweli off Black Star’s 1998 single “K.O.S. (Determination)”.
Black Star was a duo formed by Talib and fellow Brooklyn rapper Mos Def (currently goes by Yasiin Bey).
The group’s name was derived from The Black Star Line, a shipping corporation founded by Pan-Africanist revolutionary, Marcus Garvey.
“K.O.S. (Determination)” is an extremely insightful commentary on the duo’s views and perspectives on various social and political issues affecting the Black community at the time and many of which still exist today.
The acronym K.O.S. makes a powerful statement on its own as it represents Knowledge of Self.
“K.O.S. (Determination)” is one of 13 tracks from Black Star’s debut album Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star.
It received critical praise at the time of its release and it stands up historically as one of rap’s best albums, especially from a lyrical and content standpoint.
Black Star distinguished themselves in particular as their philosophical and socially conscious lyricism was a departure from the gangster rap which had emerged as the dominant force in commercial hip-hop.
The single incorporates a sample from “Baby, This Love I Have” by Minnie Riperton, also famously incorporated by A Tribe Called Quest in their 1991 hit, “Check the Rhime”.
